– Telecoms industry regulator released analysis which shows the ratings of the four major operators in Nigeria
– Millions of subscribers joined the Globacom customer base in the last one year
The figures released for 2016 by the telecoms industry regulator, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) shows that Globacom has maintained a lead position in data service offerings from 2015 to 2016. The new industry figures which show the number of customers each of the four major operators has added to their subscription number in January 2016 revealed that 354,178 subscribers joined the Globacom internet customer base. This figure, as published on the website of telecoms industry regulators, represents 94.7% of the total number of new internet customers for the four major operators.
There was however, a drop in MTN data customer base when 1,705,878 internet users left the network in January. Etisalat also recorded a loss when 94,115 internet customers abandoned the network in January while Airtel gained 19,657 new subscribers that same month. Thus, a clearer picture on how the operators fared over the last 12 months surfaced with the release of the statistics in January. The figures generated from the 12 months analysis shows Globacom added a total of 7,251,657 new internet users during the period. This represents 53% of the total 13.644 million new customers who subscribed to internet services of the four major operators.
Etisalat recorded a total of 5,431,190 new internet customers, therefore coming second. Airtel came third with 961,548 new data customers within the 12 months period. In the last one year, MTN has recorded a net loss of 1,059,160 data subscribers because the number of data subscribers left the network was more than those who joined. The January 2016 figures from the analysis reflect the trend witnessed in the last four months of 2015. Breaking down the industry figures for the last quarter of 2015, Globacom had an additional 3.2 million new internet subscribers in that quarter. Meanwhile, MTN, Airtel and Etisalat lost subscribers within that period. MTN recorded a loss of about 2 million customers between October and December 2015. Airtel experienced a decline in the number of subscribers between September and December.
