Senate condemns the police over Kogi state of assembly crisis

The Senate on Thursday, March 17, directed Solomon Arase, the Inspector General of Police, to seal the Kogi state house of assembly complex till further notice. In a report by Ali Ndume, the Senate leader, the house of representatives sought concurrence with the Senate on a delegation to Kogi state on the illegal removal of the Speaker of the Kogi state House of assembly. The Senate declared that the impeachment proceedings embarked upon five members of the Kogi house of assembly is null and void.

Also,it condemned the role played by the Nigerian police in subverting the provisions of the constitution by providing cover for only five members out of the 20 members of the Kogi House of assembly to commit illgalities. Although the lawmakers agreed to the report, they complained that a detailed report should have been presented for future references. James Manager representing Delta south senatorial district said “we have read quite a lot about the kogi state house of assembly but whatever we have heard is not enough. “But this one is just too brief. If indeed it is true for which the Senate has been invited to concur then we can. 

”Dino Melaye representing Kogi west senatorial district said that in the spirit of justice and unity, the Senate should consider this and do justice in the interest of the people. However, Bukola Saraki, the Senate President said, “we have agreed that in this type of delegation, a detailed report should be given. “There is needed for us to bring peace and fidelity. It is not in our interest to rush into things like this,” he said. Momoh Lawal, the speaker of the assembly was on Tuesday, February 16, impeached by 5 out of 25 members of the house for not carrying other members of the House along in the affairs of the assembly Umar Imam, representing Lokoja 1 constituency was elected as the new speaker.
