Mile 12 market in Lagos re-opened following peace agreement

– The closed Mile=12 market has been re-opened
– The state government plans to relocate the market as it has outgrown its present state
– The government and stakeholders came together to reach a compromise
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos has ordered the re-opening of the Mile 12 market on Thursday, March 17 following a meeting and agreement reached with all the stakeholders involved in the operation of the market. Mr. Steve Ayorinde who is the commissioner for information and strategy in a statement said the re-opening was ordered following the stakeholders’ agreement to the state government’s propositions.
The market was closed down following a clash that occurred between Yoruba and Hausa traders which left a few people dead and several others injured. Some of the agreement includes the relocation of the market to another location as the existing market has outgrown its present state; a ban on the use of commercial motorcycles ; co existence amongst all ethnic groups in the market; removal of all shanties within the market and the cessation of street trading.

Mr. Ayorinde stated that the leaders of the market agreed that they can only thrive in a peaceful environment. He said as Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has promised, the state would continue to maintain its business-friendly nature and assured of continued security. Following the closure of the market, some of the Hausa traders quickly relocated to the Kara cattle market in Ogun state perhaps due to the perishable nature of their goods.
